The Roasted Marshmallow Cabin
I had no idea I would need this weekend getaway as much as I did at this exact weekend. God has a mysterious way of working. From Prosper, the drive to Broken Bow is 3 hours almost exact. We pulled down a dirt and bumpy road, and when we pulled up to the cabin; this might sound like an exaggeration, but it felt like I heard “hallelujah” coming from the clouds. The kids jumped out of the car squealing with excitement, immediately wanting to check everything out.
Parenting in a Pandemic: As Easy as ABC?
The last time I felt this overwhelmed, drained and short-tempered was as a new mom. At that time, what helped me navigate those unchartered child-rearing waters was to create The Little A to Z: A Companion for First-Time Mothers and Their Partners. And as weeks turned into months, as working from home (WFH) without school for our 4-year old became the new norm, we found ourselves scribbling out AMini A to Z: Parenting During the Pandemic.

Halloween Safety
Halloween is an annual rite of passage for kids. From the first time a new walker toddles up to trick or treat with his parents, to older kids finally being allowed to go door-to-door on their own—Halloween is as much a part of childhood as any holiday. Which makes it one of the hardest things to see our kids giving up this year (along with birthdays, graduations and more). That’s why we decided to compile some of the best ways we’ve heard of getting into the spooky season—safely. Because while nothing is more important than keeping our kids safe (this year and always…), we’re moms—so we’ll obviously find a way to inject some joy into this day! Hope the list below helps you, too.
Maple Cinnamon Roll Pancakes
Cinnamon rolls are a favorite holiday treat, but the maple-infused pancake version below, from Nicole Washington—the talented mama behind the Brown Sugar blog—is a perfect Fall breakfast.

The Laundry Fairy is Real. It’s Hampr!
When I discovered hampr, I thought, “genius.” As moms, we have so much on our plates in general, but in 2020 this took on a whole new meaning; between our mom role, our housekeeping role, our “chef” role, our full time job roles and now the teacher role – not sure how it is possible to keep up with it all. The way I see it, hampr provides a solution to give you some time back every week to spend with your kiddos or practice some self-care!

The Local Moms Network Book Club: Eliza Starts a Rumor!
We’re thrilled to launch The Local Moms Book Club with Eliza Starts a Rumor! The book revolves around Eliza Hunt, a mom who created the Hudson Valley Ladies’ Bulletin board when her twins were in preschool. Cue the mom forum drama (a la today’s social media groups) and you have a funny story that reveals the power of moms coming together, which we of course love. Katie Couric called it “the perfect summer read” and we have to agree. We spoke to author Jane Rosen, herself a mom of three, about her inspiration, writing career and summer reading list.
Why Are Black Moms More Likely to Die During Pregnancy & Childbirth?
As moms, pregnancy and childbirth is a magical and also, complicated time. We look forward to meeting our child, but also want to be sure we’re making the best decisions, along with our healthcare provider, to get them here as safely as possible. Black moms (as well as American Indian and Alaskan Native) also face a greater risk for themselves; they are 2 to 3 times as likely to die from pregnancy related causes as white moms. In an effort to understand this important issue, we reached out to one of the top experts on this subject, Dr. Alicia D. Bonaparte, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College and co-editor of the anthology, Birthing Justice: Black Women, Pregnancy, and Childbirth.
