Why Are Black Moms More Likely to Die During Pregnancy & Childbirth?

Why Are Black Moms More Likely to Die During Pregnancy & Childbirth?

As moms, pregnancy and childbirth is a magical and also, complicated time. We look forward to meeting our child, but also want to be sure we’re making the best decisions, along with our healthcare provider,  to get them here as safely as possible. Black moms (as well as American Indian and Alaskan Native) also face a greater risk for themselves; they are 2 to 3 times as likely to die from pregnancy related causes as white moms. In an effort to understand this important issue, we reached out to one of the top experts on this subject, Dr. Alicia D. Bonaparte, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College and co-editor of the anthology, Birthing Justice: Black Women, Pregnancy, and Childbirth.

Catching Up with Donte Palmer of Squat for Change!

Last year, we spoke to Donte Palmer, dad to three boys, about his amazing Squat for Change movement. It started with a single viral photo of him trying to change his youngest son’s diaper in a public restroom, on his lap—and resulted in an initiative (including partnerships with brands like Pampers) to install changing tables in men’s bathrooms nationwide and facilitate dads being more present as parents.  In honor of Father’s Day, we wanted to check in with this inspiring dad and see what the latest is for him and #squatforchange:

A Black Mother’s Cry: An Essay by Sara Hood

A Black Mother’s Cry: An Essay by Sara Hood

Where do we go from here? What’s the solution? Why did it take this particular moment in time for everyone to wake up? Did the [COVID-19] pandemic and our lack of movement or distractions result in forcing everyone to pay attention to what we have been screaming for 400 years? As someone who’s a master of my emotions and knows for the most part how to re-center and refocus this week—my emotions have been out of control. I am mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually exhausted.
