Meet Melanie Miller, female business owner and Frisco Mom

I have recently gotten the privilege of getting to know Melanie, a local female business owner! Her new storefront is close to home and I was so excited, I had to reach out and partner with her! She’s an Aggie, a mom, and savvy business woman, I knew she was a perfect mom to share with you all here!

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Melanie Miller and I live in Frisco with my husband, David, and son, Connor (13). We also have 2 dogs, Cami and Higgins. I grew up locally in Bedford and left just after high school to attend Texas A&M University. After graduating, I moved back to the metroplex and have lived from Granbury to McKinney and a few places in between, but have never strayed from this area. We’ve been back in Frisco for the last 2 years and couldn’t be more thankful to have returned. Before launching into our shaved ice business, I had a job that kept me traveling and away from my family far more than I was happy with. I enjoyed my role, but not at the expense of my home life.  Now, we spend our free time mostly consumed with all things sports. We’ve always loved sports as a family, but Connor is involved in football, basketball, and track in school and does Tae Kwon Do outside of school, so he keeps us on the move.

Tell us about your business

We sell gourmet shaved ice! Six years ago we lived in Granbury, we found a Funky Munky Shaved Ice and it was our favorite family treat. The flavors were great and they had so many options, that we just kept going time after time. Then, as we were getting ready to move back to Frisco, I said to my husband one day, “I just want to quit my job, sell snow cones, and make people happy”. He nodded at me, as husbands do, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made to me. Making people happy makes me happy, I know how to run a business and this just seemed like the perfect way to fill those holes for me and for my family. I thought about Funky Munky, their incredible flavors and fun branding, thought I’d give them a call to explore what buying a franchise looked like and the rest is history! We began the adventure early last year when we opened our McKinney trailer in May. We’re back in McKinney this summer and just opened our new Frisco location, as well, last week across from Shawnee Trail Park on Ohio Dr.

We’re not just your ordinary snow cone. We take the time to hand shave the ice so it truly melts in your mouth. Our flavors range from traditional Blue Coconut to The Wedgie, which is a strawberry cheesecake shaved ice topped with an entire slice of cheesecake, drizzled with strawberry sauce, and completed with whipped cream and graham cracker crumbs.

Our mission is to Give Moms the Gift of Time — What are your best time-saving tips/resources as a mom?

Let’s focus on 3 of the biggest hassles in motherhood. Food, laundry, house cleaning.

Food: I like to have dinner planned first thing in the morning. If I’m not going to be home early, my husband and son know what needs to be done for said meal, which is helpful – usually.

Laundry: Fortunately, my son is old enough and does his own laundry. This is not just a great life lesson for him but it takes that chore off my list so I don’t have to worry about it. My husband gets our clothes through the washer and the dryer, then it’s just on me to fold and put away. It seems silly, but it really is helpful to not have to remember to get it all through the washer/dryer.

House cleaning: This is the biggest time-saving tip for me. We maintain, keep dishes done and things tidy, but I appreciate knowing that the house gets loved every other week from top to bottom.

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I’m hoping to see us able to grow into 3 locations and a truck. Currently, we have a trailer that sits seasonally in McKinney from May 15th-September 15th and our new year-round brick-and-mortar location in Frisco with a walk-up window and drive-thru. One more brick-and-mortar, I would love to have an interior seating area in the next one, and a mobile unit that allows us to do local events would round out our current territory perfectly!

What are some of the most rewarding moments of being a mom and a business owner?

Hands down, the most rewarding part is watching the smiles. It makes my heart so happy to see the same faces time and time again knowing that they love us enough to keep coming back. The experience is just as important to me as the product we put out and knowing that we’ve hit the mark on both counts is the greatest feeling as a business owner. Having the opportunity to create that and have my son do it alongside me is truly my “why”. I love having the ability to show him what good service, community involvement and communication looks like in real time.

Favorite coffee place in McKinney/Allen/Frisco?

LOVE coffee…it might be my love language, if that’s possible. Summer Moon is my local favorite, a friend introduced me and I’m hooked. While I don’t like my drinks incredibly sweet, their Moon Milk (1/4 moon for me) is absolutely amazing! It’s not just a good coffee, their atmosphere and staff are incredibly warm and welcoming.

Thank you Melanie for giving us the gift of your time! If you want to make some core memories with your family, check out one of the Funky Munky locations in McKinney or Frisco!
