When your work life meets your personal life, it’s truly the sweetest blend. Lindsey was one of my first friends when I moved to the area and started dating my now husband. We’ve known each other for years and seeing her grow in her careers, marriage, and motherhood has truly been one of the sweetest gifts a friend could ever wish for! We used to go on long weekend river float trips before kids, now we’re lucky to get in a string of 10 words over coffee while the kids play at the park or a birthday party, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I am so happy to introduce her, the Cockerham family, and her amazing, creative business ventures to our community!
Tell Us About Yourself: “Hi, I’m Lindsey. This summer marks my 10th year of living in North Dallas. I was born in Midland, TX and lived there for a few years, but the majority of my childhood was spent in the small town of Ballinger, TX. You might not guess it now, but I grew up on a farm and used to be an active member in 4H and FFA. I had big dreams of living in the city after college and ended up moving to Frisco to participate in the Sherwin Williams management training program. I joined the Junior League of Collin County to meet people and learn more about my new community. That decision brought me some of my closest friends and helped make North Dallas feel like home. I quickly realized that retail management was not the career for me and moved on to work in Life & Disability insurance for Cigna. After the birth of my first son, I knew that I wanted to be a SAHM. I now reside in Mckinney with my husband and our 2 sons.”
Tell Us About Your Businesses! “When I became a SAHM, I was looking for a creative outlet. I’ve done my own nails for years, but I got really into nail art during this time. I started researching how to make dip powder and created a business with 2 friends. I was always looking for ways to save time and doing my nails regularly just became too time consuming and messy. I also realized that I enjoyed using the products more than making them. I saw a YouTube video of someone making press-on nails during Covid and decided to make myself a set. The dip powder business ended up dissolving due to big life changes in our group, so I decided to start over on my own and shift my focus to press-on nails. Electric Violet Nails offers handmade press-on nails to help busy women get fabulous nails from the comfort of home! I create a custom set of nails that is made to fit your unique fingers. They’re much more durable than the traditional drug store press-on nail and can even be reused with proper care and removal. I absolutely love the process of building a business from the ground up, so much that I’ve recently created a second business called HeartSync Homeschool Hub, which will offer enrichment courses to homeschool students. I made the decision to homeschool my 2 boys and noticed a lack of affordable enrichment options in our area, which inspired me to create my own program. HeartSync will be opening this summer in Plano and will offer subjects such as: Creative Writing, Geography, Home Ec, & Art.”
Our mission is to Give Moms the Gift of Time, What are your best time-saving tips/resources as a mom? “Press-on nails and crockpot meals ha! Custom press-on nails always have my nails looking cute in about 20 minutes and you can’t beat a good crockpot meal. As someone who doesn’t love cooking, I prefer spending as little mental energy on meals as possible.”
Are there any promotions or events that you want to share with our community? “I love doing local vendor popups for Electric Violet Nails. Keep an eye out on my social media for updates on where I’ll be popping up next! If you’re interested in learning more about homeschool programs in our area, come visit me at the Texas Homeschool Expo. It will be at Grapevine Convention Center June 7th-8th from 10-4pm. I’ll have a booth for HeartSync Homeschool Hub and you can learn more about the programs we’ll be offering.”
Favorite coffee place in McKinney/Allen/Frisco? “You can’t beat a cookie butter latte from Armor Coffee Co in Allen. If it were closer to my house I’d probably be there every day!”
How old are your children, and how do you balance motherhood with your businesses? “My boys are 4 and 2. Some days are harder to balance than others, so I just try to be as flexible as possible. One thing that motherhood has taught me, is that things don’t always go as planned and sometimes you just have to pivot. My kids will always be my 1st priority and sometimes that means I have to be up a little later at night to accomplish all my business tasks.”
What does your typical workday look like? “One of my favorite things about being a small business owner is the flexibility to create my own schedule. I’m able to spend slow mornings with my kids and catch up on emails while they play. The bulk of my work is done while they’re sleeping, so we have plenty of great quality time and the ability to do homeschool lessons during the day.”
How do you prioritize your well-being and avoid burnout? Self-care tips for other small business owning moms? “Find things that bring you joy that aren’t related to your business. I have always loved reading, but after becoming a mom I lost touch with it for a bit. I recently started incorporating audiobooks into my nightly routine. Being able to listen to a good book while I’m working on nails has helped me finish so many amazing books during this busy season of life. Another thing that helps me is scheduling time to myself. Even an hour-long pedicure can make a huge difference.” I could not agree more!
