The Sweetest Memories: A Mom's Guide to the Perfect Berry Picking Day - North Dallas Moms

Picking berries with your kids, is there a more nostalgic childhood memory?! I chatted with Tim at Goober Bub’s and asked him some of the basic questions so you’ll be prepared when you take your family! It’s sure to be a ‘berry good time.’

1. What is the best way to dress? Type of shoes?
Dress comfortably, you’ll be walking and doing a lot of bending over! Comfortable shoes, but toes covered for different conditions.
2. Is it sunny or shady?
Same conditions as outside, sunny most likely. We have a pavilion with picnic tables for shade and relaxing.
3. How do you know what to pick? What do you look for?
Pick fully ripe berries, red all the way. The berries will be sweeter and more juicy.
4. How much should I expect to spend for a bucket of berries? Do you sell other farm fresh items?
Goober Bub’s berries are $7.50 per pound. Probably common for most families to pick 1-4 lbs. Goober Bub’s also sells strawberry jam when available, frozen strawberry lemonade, and strawberry baked goods (donuts, muffins, and a cookie).
5. Do you use pesticides/herbicides? How should we clean the berries?
Unfortunately, I do have to use some pesticides, but all are approved for use on strawberries. We eat them without rinsing, but it’s always a good practice to rinse the berries (just before consuming).
6. Can we bring a picnic blanket and stay for a while?
You can bring a blanket, but Goober Bub’s also has 21 picnic tables under a pavilion.
7. How long does the season last generally? When are you open?
Length of the season is weather dependent, but generally goes from early April to Mid or late May. Strawberries do not like high temperatures, so will quit producing blossoms when temperatures start to go up.
8. Should we bring our own container or is there a basket/bucket there to put our haul in?
Goober Bub’s has complimentary picking containers (quart and 2.5 quart) and also sells a 4 quart “busket” for $3 that can be re-used for any return trips to the farm.
9. Is there a best time of day?
There will always be more berries to choose from if arriving close to opening time. Berries in general seem to be sweeter tasting in the morning, but are very good all day if the temperature is not high. Blackberries seem to always be better in the mornings.
10. Do you have a favorite recipe to share using your berries in case we take home more than we can eat right away?
Fresh picked strawberries from any of the north Texas farms are so much better than store bought. It is not difficult to eat them plain or use them in salads, cereals, or desserts – like strawberry shortcake. Strawberries that do not get picked at Goober Bub’s are used in our jam, frozen strawberry lemonade, and also our baked items.
Thank you so much Tim!
